No exercise system is right for absolutely everyone, but Pilates exercises are easily modifiable to suit most people with the correct training from a professional instructor. As with all exercise methods, you should always consult with a doctor before beginning any new exercise regime.

Alison Hogan Pilates is a specially devised Pilates training method developed from years of Pilates teaching and experience. It has helped men and women of all ages develop optimal strength, flexibility, endurance and improved postural alignment without bulky muscles or joint pressure.
Where is The Pilates Studio Located?
The Pilates Studio, Athlone is located at the Dancing Soul in Monksland Business Park. As you travel from Athlone towards Athlone Springs hotel, take the right turn after Alkermes. We are on the 2nd floor in the Primary Care Unit behind Savory Fare.
How should I prepare for a class?
Drink plenty of water during the day to ensure you are well hydrated for your class so muscle cramping does not occur.
How big are the classes?
Since the classes at The Pilates Studio are dedicated to providing clear instruction with a hands on approach classes are of limited number.
Do I need to bring anything with me to classes?
All classes provide mats and small equipment. If you wish you can bring your own mat. I do recommend you bring water and a towel along with you.
How do I inform the instructor of my injury?
Before attending classes at The Pilates Studio you must fill out a registration form online. The form requires you to inform your instructor of any old or existing injuries or health issues that would affect you during a class.
Failure to disclose any health issues, injuries old or pre-existing means your instructor cannot offer you best care during your classes.
Should I eat before classes?
Since the Pilates exercise system is focused on use of your abdominals heavy meals are not advisable before classes. Instead, a banana or something small is suggested if you are hungry. Please ensure to drink plenty of water to remain hydrated before classes and prevent muscle cramping.
What should I wear to a Pilates class?
Comfortable clothes that are not too loose are preferable – shorts, tracksuit bottoms, or leggings with a t-shirt or vest. Avoid anything with pockets or zips. It is helpful for your instructor if you wear form-fitting clothing as she can ensure your posture and muscle engagement are correct. Shoes are not worn during the classes.
What can I expect during a class?
The classes at The Pilates Studio are comfortable, spacious and airy. You are asked to arrive on time to not disturb the rhythm of the classes. Fundamentals are a 45-minute class while the other class types run for 60 minutes. Your instructor leads your class through each exercise guaranteeing you are always engaging the exact muscles and your body alignment is correct.
What is the difference between Pilates and Yoga?
Both Pilates and Yoga offer stress-relief, flexibility, strength, control, and endurance. The biggest difference between the two is the emphasis on the spiritual component in classes. Most Pilates classes don’t offer a dedicated spiritual experience such as chanting, meditation, and breath work. The slow paced, focused movement of Pilates exercises can be meditative and stress relieving.
How often should I practice Pilates?
Joseph Pilates said “After 10 sessions you’ll feel better, after 20 sessions you’ll look better and after 30 sessions you’ll have a new body.” Yes, this is true but it does require a level of commitment to your practice. It is recommended that, after the fundamental level, 2 sessions a week along with some home practice will give you the best results.
